Our deep desire is to continue to strive to improve the medical knowledge and training we impact on our students in other to keep them prepared for the rapidly changing world in medical education, research and practice, thus keeping them competitive on the world stage.

Consistent with our goal to continuously seek excellence in medical education, I would like to introduce everyone to our latest initiative to enhance our medical and health sciences students learning using the latest advanced technological tool known as Immersive or Virtual Reality Learning.

Virtual Reality learning is fast becoming an indispensable adjunct to traditional modes of education and indeed in some cases has become the mainstream mode of learning. Virtual Reality’s intrinsic ability to allow for increased comprehension and retention of medical concepts through immersive visualization of learning content is unparallel. Concepts which may be difficult to comprehend through traditional modes of learning gets deeply explored using this technological tool with the sole goal of enhancing comprehension and ensuring assimilation, retention, and mastery of very critical medical knowledge and skill sets. Furthermore, intrinsic in this technological innovation is its capability for extensive cross collaborative learning between national and international institutions on the virtual platform. This collaborative component allows for transfer of skill sets between institutions both in health sciences, premedical and clinical sciences as well as clinical practice.

To this end, the College of Medicine of University of Nigeria is embarking on an ambitious project to set up its own Immersive Learning Virtual Reality Studio Lab. The V.R laboratory will consist of a large dedicated secure learning space equipped with Virtual Reality Headsets, advanced V.R Compatible Computers, Custom-made Compatible Tables and Chairs, Electric Projector Screen, 10KVA Solar Powered Inverter system, Internet Supply and IT staff solely dedicated to the smooth-running process of the platforms. It will also require contractual licensing agreement for V.R compliant Medical Education Software for Virtual Reality learning. The licensed VR curriculum software, already in use in medical schools across the US, UK and some other western countries will include extensive premedical sciences of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry as well as different aspects of pathologies in the clinical and health sciences. This licensed software will enable us implement our highly valued collaboration between College of Medicine University of Nigeria with the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota through our virtual platform. Our students will benefit from interactional sessions with instructors and also with medical and health science students from these world class institutions. We hope in future this paves a way for exchange educational programs between the institutions.

The V.R Studio lab is projected to cost $175,000. Unfortunately, the college is not capable of funding this venture in any way. Consequently, I would like to plead with our alumni and friends of the College to contribute generously to make this worthwhile venture a reality. I would like to continue to express my appreciation and profound gratitude to our great alumni for all they have done for the College so far. We are indeed very lucky to have highly accomplished as well as conscientious individuals as part of our support system.
